The story behind the ROAD TO NOWHERE: When the Fontana lake was built Lakeview Drive was to have stretched along the north shore of Fontana Lake, from Bryson City to Fontana. The construction of the 30 mile stretch was never finished due to an environmental issue and construction was stopped, with the road ending at a tunnel, about six miles into the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. For those being displaced by the building of the lake, a road from Bryson City to Deals Gap along a route north of the river was to be built. It was intended not only to allow people to make travel easier, but to also grant access to family graveyards and lands that had been in families for years past.
